Show: Without Motive Genre: Drama Starring: Kenneth Cranham, Ross Kemp Studio: Acorn Media Runtime: 600 minutes Release Date: October 11, 2011 Format: DVD Discs: 4 Rating: ( )Grade: B- "Without Motive" is a gritty British cop series from 2000 that follows Detective Constable Jack Mowbray (Kemp) and his team as they search for a serial killer in Bristol. Grisly and unforgiving, the viewer gets more than his or her fair share of blood, guts, and gory details of this mysterious killer that kills with no apparent reason, hence the title of the series. "Without Motive" is the complete 2-series DVD. 12 episodes over four discs. You can choose subtitles if you want, but the accents were not that difficult to pick through. Series one, episodes 1-6, begin with investigations underway to catch the serial killer, and while series two is a continuation of the plot, the police is dealing with a copy cat killer. As if the killer aspect isn't enough pressure on these characters there are more than enough subplots to keep it interesting; adultery, jealousy, rivalry, and hot tempers. Mowbray is a loose cannon. While he is passionate about his job and his family, he lacks the finesse in showing it appropriately. He would rather destroy the family kitchen to end an argument with his wife. Kemp reminds me of Michael Chiklis in his portrayal of this angsty DC, and I'm not sure that it' just the bald head. All in all, "Without Motive" is enjoyable, but I wonder just how many police shows really exist across the pond. Haven't they run out of ideas by now? |
