Abbott Jones, She Bits This is the third time that I’ve been given the opportunity to enjoy an Electric Six album for review (previous reviews include Flashy and Zodiac) and the band is still relentlessly putting out solid music. The basic core elements of what made the band fantastic for me are still in place and there are some new elements to be admired with their latest release, Heartbeats and Brainwaves! Back in 2008 when I covered the bands Flashy album release I was impressed. The whole Rocky Horror Picture Show reference is still relevant and front man Dick Valentine hasn’t skipped a beat since those days. Heartbeats and Brainwaves is a solid effort from the band mixing dark humor with a kind of Broadway appeal to it and rock with a flash of synthesizers and horns to boot. There is a serious 80’s electro pop vibe going on all throughout the album (think bands like Camouflage, Depeche Mode, Real Life) which works really well within the context of the music. Its just another amazingly bizarre thrill ride from a band that’s all about having a good time with silly humor lyrically but the talent to pull it off with conviction. There’s no shame in bumping these tunes in your ride or in your home. The only real toss out on the entire album, for me, was The Intergalactic Version. As always final judgment is yours. |
