When Rage Against The Machine appeared on the scene I instantly took a liking to the rap/metal fusion genre. My collection began to become crammed with bands like Downset, Clawfinger, Shootyz Groove, P.O.D., 311, and more. Eventually the genre died down a bit and fans were left with deviations of that particular style which didn’t turn out so well. When I first heard about FateTwister I was a little excited, but having been there before I knew not to get my hopes up. Having listened to the album, for the fourth time yesterday, I’m still not sold.

Maybe I’ve just been spoiled by the many great bands that have created the soundtrack for my life from The Beastie Boys to EDL to Dog Eat Dog and beyond, because listening to Fatetwister I’m just not feeling it. At best this feels like a demo tape effort from a band that knows its own history but doesn’t steer far enough from it, making most of the tracks on the album sound like poor mimicry and the bands overall sound without much of a voice. Lead Singer Dylan Coburn’s vocal delivery is pretty monochromatic throughout the entirety of the album and his flow sounds read and uninspired. There are even a few times when he sounds as if he’s trying to perform his best Zack De La Rocha  “C’mon”. Another minus, and I have to beg bands and or their respective labels, if your going to send out a digital copy of an album please include the lyrics. While some of it sank through I’m at a loss which, let’s face it, a bands lyrics is where it really counts.

As a complete band all the idea’s are there from synths to some pretty decent chorus’ but the album moves along at a molasses slow approach with possibly the only song off the album that feels lively being Just Wanna Know. Not sure what Fatetwister had been shooting for but it felt absolutely under produced. I think back to the first album from Clawfinger, a band that barely made it into my collection, which was out of step yet when they released their next album they had found their sound. I think in time, if Fatetwister keeps moving forward, they will be able to define their sound and come back with a more fulfilled sounding release. Until then I don’t see their first album staying in my collection for long. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoy.
