Mikey Sabatella began his music career as a duo with his cousin Brian Shaw in 1998. The two recorded demo’s and played live shows until they found a backing band that would accommodate their sound. Heavy touring ensued and the newly formed Limitpoint did well. Sabatella would eventually go on to begin a solo career which produced Sabatella’s debut album A Life In The Day and now this, A New Horizon.

The album is a very filling 16+ minutes. As I listened to the album I found myself surprised every time it ended, then of course I’d hit play again. One of my favorite features about the album is that it is so well produced. The sound quality for this album is phenomenal. Every instrument is heard with acute clarity that gives you an amazing immersive experience. Your never once straining to hear lyrics through the conglomeration of instrument sounds. Honestly it struck you to listen to one single instrument on the album it would be fairly easy. Snare and kick drum take the forefront for drums with cymbals crashing at a little lower frequency, on guitar you hear every string being strummed, and vocals are so clear. It’s hard for me to think of another album that was so well balanced.

Sabatella made remarks towards his music that he wanted it to sound and feel natural. Write down a lyric, leave it unrevised, roll with it. Maybe having that information before hand played a bit of bias into the scheme of things but lyrically the album feels…right, and Sabatella’s vocal delivery seems to contain that moment in time when the lyrics were created. To add to the delivery Sabatella orchestrates some pretty fantastic effects sounds that shroud words with a bit more of an emotional push. Just listen to the whistling sections in A New Horizon or Finish Line Without A Start’s background vocal harmonizing. Like I said, it’s a very filling album that will bring you back again and again. Enjoy.
