If an end-of-the-world comedy/drama (dramedy? crama?) starring Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, and basically every other awesome actor and actress in existence doesn't at least pique your interest, you might need to check your pulse. This isn't Armageddon for the hipster crowd, but it is a touching story about what to do when the end of the world is imminent. The cause of death this time around is a 70 mile-wide meteor named Matilda. She's on a collision course for Earth, so naturally all hell breaks loose as everyone uses the upcoming disaster as an excuse to behave badly. In the midst of the chaos, Carell's Dodge is simply trying to figure out what to do with his life now that his wife has left him. He's a quiet tour de force in this film, a center of calm and internal confusion. His work with Knightley's Penny is heartwarming, funny, and a joy to watch.

The film takes risks tonally, moving from comedy to drama to black comedy to drama and back to comedy again. I have a feeling that your enjoyment of it will hinge largely on how well you like these shifts. They're not overpowering, but there are some scenes where the tone changes very quickly. I can't get too much more into the plot for fear of ruining it for those who haven't seen it yet. But I will say that I really enjoyed it, from start to finish. It's definitely a little weird and off-kilter, but i think it works more often than not.

The Blu-Ray copy of the film looks fantastic. It also comes with a DVD copy and a digital version of the movie that you can download from iTunes. The bonus features include outtakes, an inside look behind-the-scenes, a feature on the music of the film, and a commentary from the filmmakers. To be sure, this is a quirky movie and not to everyone's taste, but I throughly enjoyed it. Check it out if you're feeling adventurous.
