Title: The Ride of Their Lives Genre: Documentary, Sports/Recreation Starring: Kevin Costner, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, Darell Waltrip Director: Rory Karpf Studio: MTV Runtime: 93 minutes Release Date: February 10, 2009 Format: DVD Rating: ( )Grade: C Personally, I find NASCAR to be one of the most boring sports to watch, after all, it's just a bunch of drivers making left hand turns over and over again. Of course, there's more to it but still, it's pretty difficult to watch. The Ride of Their Lives follows the sport of NASCAR, from its introduction up until its presence today. The main focus on the documentary is the Daytona 500, one of the most pristine races, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Kevin Costner, much in the same way March of the Penguins and Arctic Tale are narrated by Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah, narrates the program. Much like the sport itself, I found the program to be somewhat boring. Racing fans will disagree, I'm sure, but it wasn't that interesting. Costner doesn't have much of a captivating voice so that didn't help me from falling asleep. Granted, it was more interesting than watching the sporting event itself. There were plenty of interviews with NASCAR drivers, both past and present and some of the footage from the early years is interesting. People with knowledge of NASCAR can probably relate to it more but even novices such as myself can recognize some of the big names such as Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and many others. Special features include more interviews and other extensions of the main program that are compiled into about a one hour compilation. Should you pick this up? I would say no, not because it's not worth seeing, especially for NASCAR fanatics, but because you can watch it on CMT. If you can make the time to go out and buy the DVD than surely you have the time to look up when it will be on TV next. |
