Title: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Genre: Action/Adventure Publisher: Activision Available Consoles: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Personal Computer (PC), Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation Portable (PSP), Xbox 360 Reviewed Consoles: Playstation 3 Ship Date: July 6, 2009 Players: 1 (Online: 8) Time to Finish: 4-5 Hours Rating: ( )Grade: D+ The first Transformers game played out as if it were a game made by Hasbro for their toys. That's a good thing, really, as most movie to video game adaptations are less than acceptable. The first game had a decent plot, easy to use controls and the free roam ability to just mess around between missions. All that is now out the window. In the sequel, they took a good thing and screwed it all up. The characters are one dimensional (in character, not appearance), the controls are massive, complicated and change between characters. There is no more free roam ability as you just jump from mission to mission trying to finish them in the allotted time (sometimes as little as 2 minutes) in an attempt to get a gold, silver or bronze metal (what this has to do with Transformers is beyond me). In the previous game, you can simply transform (and stay as a car) in with the push of the triangle button (on PS3). Now, because it seems EVERY button is some sort of control, the transformation button is the R2 and you have to hold it down the entire time you are using it. You can't simply stay as a vehicle without holding it down. This also controls your speed as a vehicle and, to slow down, you have to gently let off of the R2 while still keeping it engaged. This feature is more than annoying, especially since they nailed it in the first game. There are 23 missions in the game, allowing you to zip through it in a matter of a few short hours, making it much shorter than the first. You are unable to play as Megatron (even though his appearance in the movie is pretty heavy) and, even with the other characters, they are given powers that are sometimes not even associated to who they are. Unfortunately, this games fails in comparison to the first as ActiVision made an attempt to capitalize on the built-in fanbase instead of creating an all original and fun game from scratch again. Jumping from mission to mission on a clock is not fun and, overall, is an extremely irritating experience. Oh, and the CG quality? Horrible. The "deep blacks" are gray and everything else is a faded version of what it should be. So much for taking advantage of the high definition experience. |
