The Fast and the Furious franchise has always been about high octane action and racing skills that would put some of the best drivers around to shame. Fast Five continues that story right from where the fourth film left off.

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) has just been busted out of prison by Brian (Paul Walker) and the rest of the crew. After fleeing to Brazil, they decided to do one more job and then disappear forever. $100 million doesn’t come easy though so it’s going to take a team of experts to pull this heist off. To make matters worse, they have attracted the attention of DDS federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) who will go through any means necessary to put Toretto back behind bars. It’s the battle of the brawns between Diesel and Johnson, and only one can remain the victor.

Right off the bat, you’re thrown into a world that defies any logic and common sense so prepare to leave all of that at the door. Who do you think would win in a collision between a bus and a Camaro? Well, apparently the Camaro wins as evidence by the bus flipping over. Warning, don’t try anything you see on screen at home. You’ll likely die if you do.

While much of the film is absolutely ridiculous in this aspect, there is a certain amount of adrenaline and enjoyment in watching Fast Five. You’ll no doubt favor the return of many characters from each of the previous installments of the franchise including Han (Sung Kang), Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris). Then there’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

For every force, there is an equal and opposite force. For Vin Diesel, that force is Dwayne Johnson. He isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty either, and manages to go toe to toe with the action star. Unfortunately, there’s only one scene that really pits the two muscled men against each other. As great as it was, there simply wasn’t enough of Johnson throughout the film.

Something else there didn’t appear to be much of in the film was cars. The first film was all about racing these flashy and suped up cars. Fast Five is more about planning the heist. As a result, it feels more like an Oceans 11 film rather than one from the Fast and the Furious franchise.

If you’ve enjoyed the other films in series up until this point, you’ll most likely enjoy Fast Five. It’s much of the same high speed adrenaline action you’re used to. Dwayne Johnson is a good addition too, although I would have liked to see more of him. Oh, and be sure to stay for a bit longer after the credits, you’ll be in for a big surprise.
