Title: Megamind Genre: Action/Adventure, Animation, Comedy, Kids Starring: Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, Brad Pitt Director: Tom McGrath Studio: Paramount Pictures Runtime: 96 minutes In Theatres: November 5, 2010 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B- ORIGIN STORY The film's plot was based on the premise: "What if Lex Luthor defeated Superman?" Ever since he was an infant, Megamind (Will Ferrell) has always been considered an outcast. It might have been because he was a big-headed blue alien, or maybe it was because he was always being outdone by his rival, Metro Man (Brad Pitt). Regardless the reason, he decided that he was going to stick to what he knew best; being bad. Unfortunately, he wasn't too good at that either as Metro Man would always be there to stop him. One day though, Megamind manages to kidnap news reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey) and defeat Metro Man, much to the surprise of the whole city. With him out of the picture, Megamind is free to roam the streets doing whatever he pleases. This newfound glory soon comes to an end though as he becomes bored with himself, having no one to fight against. He decides to create a new superhero out of Roxanne's nerdy cameraman, Hal (Jonah Hill). Like the majority of his schemes, the plan goes horribly wrong when Hall, now known as Tighten, becomes a super villain and takes over the city. Can Megamind put his past aside and become the superhero he's always wanted to be or will he remain a social outcast forever? Many people seem to still think that animated movies are only for kids and that is completely false. Sure, the jokes can be pretty childish but there are plenty of content for adults as well. The story involves acceptance and there is a constant inter-conflict within Megamind. Unfortunately, it can also be a bit confusing at times. You'll wonder whether Megamind is the good guy or bad guy throughout the film. The same can be said for Metro Man and Tighten. There is simply too much flip-flopping going on. Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, and David Cross all lend their talents to bring Megamind to life. I was actually surprised at how little Pitt was in the film as he was heavily featured in the previews. David Cross probably has the strongest showing of them all as the adorable and funny as Minion, the right hand man to Megamind. Megamind isn't perfect but both kids and adults can find something to like in this animated superhero film. There are some laughs to be had and the story is much more in depth than expected. Oh, and the 3D isn't half bad either. |
