Show: Happy Endings Season/Volume: 1 Genre: Comedy Starring: Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton Studio: ABC Studios Release Date: September 20, 2011 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: ( )Grade: A- Did You Know? There was some speculation as to whether Damon Wayans Jr., who also was cast in FOX's "The New Girl," would stick with "Happy Endings" or leave for "The New Girl." His part in "The New Girl" ended up being re-cast so he could stick with "Happy Endings." The easiest way to talk about Happy Endings is in reference to other shows. Take the off-the-wall, fast-paced humor of Glee. Slide it a little farther over on the inappropriate scale, like day drinking at work. Stop well before it ventures into uncomfortable, politically incorrect It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia territory. Throw in a runaway bride situation with the camera tracking back up to the half-empty altar in the pilot episode, and you have something that resembles what the show is like. The show basically follows six Chicago friends and their hilarious misadventures. And boy, are their misadventures hilarious. From Max's (Adam Pally) hipster boot camp to an unintentional reality show of Penny's (Casey Wilson, a diamond among pebbles) life to Jane (Eliza Coupe) getting a little too enthusiastic during a krav maga class, there's always something for the six of them to get into with plenty of one-liners to boot. This can be attributed to fine writing; kudos to you, writers of Happy Endings. You've got a finger on the pulse of what young Americans find funny, and how to express that through your characters. Keep doing you. If there's one episode I recommend everyone in America watch, it's "Dave of the Dead." It combines a zombie apocalypse survival contest between Max and Jane with Penny's brief courtship with a hipster and Max's coaching of Penny. It's the most well-done topical television episode I've seen in a long time. Unfortunately, the show is having a hard time finding an audience, and this is in part due to ABC trying its hardest to make the show impossible for people to access (premiering midseason, airing episodes out of order, etc.). Honestly, I don't know why this isn't one of the most popular shows on TV right now. It's got all the right components: a talented, likeable cast, on-point writing, and killer execution. Even the extras on the DVDs are super enjoyable. Please, do yourself a favor and watch this legitimately funny version of Friends. If you don't like it, I don't know what to tell you. I'll pray for you. And I'm atheist. Happy Endings airs on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM EST. |
