Getting Recognition

Jeremy Davies recently won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Dickie Bennett.

Since the premiere of the series in 2010, Justified has remained one of the most underrated gems on television today due to an unbelievably talented cast and intelligent writing.  The second season still stands as the current highlight of the series thanks to Margo Martindale's amazing portrayal of Mags Bennett, but the third season adds several dynamic new characters to the fold resulting in the excellent program fans have come to expect.

Season three begins three weeks after the showdown with the Bennett clan.  Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant, The Crazies) is back on the job yet still recovering from his gunshot wound leaving his sharpshooting skills ineffective.  The lone survivor of the Bennett clan, Dickie Bennett (Jeremy Davies, Lost), finds himself stuck in prison unable to recover the inheritance left by his mother.  Longtime criminal and Raylan's main rival Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins, The Shield) gets himself thrown in jail as an attempt to get to Dickie.  Unbeknownst to practically everyone, Mags kept the majority of her money under the watchful eye of the leader of Noble's Holler - Ellstin Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson, best remembered as Bubba from Forrest Gump).  As if Raylan wasn't busy enough, the main foe this season is Robert Quarles (Neal McDonough, Band of Brothers), a crony from the Detroit mafia sent to muscle in on the criminal landscape of Kentucky.

Unless Justified falls into some sort of creative tailspin for the remainder of its existence, Raylan Givens will be the definitive role of Timothy Olyphant's career.  Olyphant manages to perfectly blend the auro of an old Western hero and present-day lawman with witty banter and snappy comebacks.  Memorable quotes reign supreme on this show where the storylines are so intricately plotted that missing a single episode seems unimagineable.  My favorite episode of the season happens to be the very first entitled "The Gunfighter" where a villian appropriately nicknamed Ice Pick is introduced.  Instead of prolonging the eventual meeting between Ice Pick and Givens for the entire season, the build-up and conclusion of the storyline is one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen in a single episode on television.

Fans of the series should be satisfied with the special features on this set including a whopping nine commentary tracks from the possible 13 episodes.  An outtake reel, several short deleted scenes, and a trio of featurettes round out this release.  The "Anatomy of a Stunt" featurette provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of stuntman specifically Walton Goggin's stunt double who has worked with him since his time on The Shield.  For viewers new to the series, I highly suggest a marathon viewing of the first three seasons before the new season kicks off this January.
