Did You Know?

Shin Chan’s 17th movie was released on April 18, 2009 in Japan.

If Stewie from Family Guy and Cartman from South Park are not rude enough for you, try one of the most annoying and offensive children in anime series. Meet Shin Chan. This kindergartener will gross you out, make you uncomfortable and laugh at the same time, and possibly offend you too. If you have never heard of the show, brace yourself for “OMG! He didn’t!” moments.

While Shin Chan (both the manga and TV series) is still ongoing in Japan, here in the US Adult Swim stopped showing the series for now, and this DVD set includes the last 13 episodes. Right from the start this volume gets the ball rolling with a parody of Rocky IV, but the best spoof was still the “Shin Wars” in the previous volume. Although this episode is called “High School Years”, Shin is not actually in high school (as far as I know Shin does not grow up ever). The series often makes several spoofs of popular movies/TV shows, and refers to American pop culture which obviously replaced the Japanese one. The rest of the volume follows similar patterns, but fortunately with different characters and circumstances. A new funny character, Kenta the schizophrenic kendo master, is introduced in the final episode “The Epicish Battle Comenceth!”.

Just like the previous DVD sets, there are no subtitles, and the same types of special features are included. Shin Chan is one of the anime series that likely divides anime fans. You will either love it or hate it. I find Shin Chan interesting and memorable probably because the US anime world is mainly dominated by action, adventure or romance genres. This set was not the funniest Shin Chan DVD for me, but I still recommend it to anime viewers who don’t mind primitive anime styles, childish toilet humor, and offensive, sarcastic and obnoxious contents. I hope this will not be the last time that I will hear from Shin Chan.

Special Features:

  • Audio Commentary for Episode 51 “Box for Hire?”
  • “From the Bowels of the Booth” outtakes and bloopers
  • Original Storyboards
  • “Long Grey Winter” Music Video
  • Trailers
