At the end of April Jessica Campbell will be releasing her second album, The Anchor and The Sail. There are only 10 songs on this new album of hers but the shortest song clocks in at 3:19 minutes long. With having the songs last up to a little over 4 minutes long, this album goes from looking like a short 10 song album to what timed out to be a 12 song album. Jessica Campbell's new album is all about love and loss, or maybe loss and love, either way, it's love and loss. It's a happy and sad romantic album that features songs that sounds like they are her love life being told in a song format. Nothing actually surprising since that's the majority of songs out there and this is no different from all those others.
I am not a big fan of these pop/country emotional style songs because I either have to be just starting a relationship where I'm all giddy happy or at the end of one where I'm all-sad. These songs are all about the emotions and the impact of what Jessica Campbell is singing about had on her life. Even though I might not be a big fan of the emotional relationship style song I can't dismiss the level of the songs and of Jessica Campbell. Yes these songs are about being in love to breaking up but it's so easy to hear the emotion that Jessica Campbell has put into the songs. She is able to sing about these feelings and make them clearly heard in the lyrics so there's no misunderstanding in what she's singing about. She also has a very strong voice yet one that's still smooth and easy to listen to. She doesn’t have a girly voice but if she had had the girly voice on these songs I would have turned the power off pretty quickly.
There are some good beats on this album where I can hear that the musicians have some skill playing a song. Though some of the songs do have a similar beat to them it's not enough to say that it takes away anything from the album. I might not like the songs but I do know that Jessica Campbell is a good singer. These songs are well played, they have vocals that are strong and smooth, and they all have energy and emotions pouring out of them. If these songs had more pep to them and less of the emotional dating style song I would have really enjoyed The Anchor and The Sail. Still, I couldn't get past all the feelings and how it felt like I went through the stages of teen love in only 10 songs, even with the talent of the members and Jessica Campbell.
