Nickelodeon has release a new DVD to help children learn about colors. The collection contains six episodes from five different shows including Bubble Guppies, Dora the Explorer, Team Umizoomi, Blue’s Clues, and Wonder Pets! and are geared towards learning colors. I expected there to be a lot of repetition in the episodes but each show focuses on different aspects of colors.

Bubble Guppies is the most sophisticated of the episodes and teaches kids about how to mix colors together to create new colors. Rather than just showing children colors like purple, green, and orange, it actually teaches them how to combine the main colors to create others. Dora the Explorer, on the other hand, uses colors to teach Spanish. Sure, there’s going to be some overlapping but when you’re trying to learn, repetition is a good thing. The Blue’s Clues episode, for instance, is similar to Bubble Guppies in that it focuses on creating different colors, although it’s more sophisticated with colors like vermillion and chartreuse. It could be a little advanced for some kids.

Team Umizoomi feels somewhat out of place on the DVD. While it has some color aspects to it, the show is more about learning math and shapes. The same can be said of Wonder Pets! The DVD’s two episodes don’t have much to do with learning at all, let along colors. The only reason it’s a part of this collection seems to be because it primarily takes place within a coloring book. It’s more about saving various animals and singing than any sort of learning.

Nickelodeon’s Let’s Learn Colors DVD is good for helping children learn all about colors. While there’s some content that feels out of place, the majority of it is worthwhile and entertaining for kids. There’s also a coloring worksheet included with the DVD (although no crayons), which I thought was a nice addition. This is definitely something a parent would love to have for their kids.
