Artist: Jambo Album: Hootenanny Members: Steve Pierson, Melinda McGraw, Michael Murphy, Philip Bynoe, Herman Matthews, David Leach Label: Got The Blues Music Tracks: 14 Type: LP Release Date: February 12, 2013 Discs: 1 Rating: ( )Grade: A The latest release from family friendly artist Jambo offers up more goodies in blues, ragtime, and singer/songwriter style that is sure to find favor with just about any type of music listener. Jambo is, in the new fashion of children’s music, a far cry from kids music of the 80’s. You’ve got some tracks on here that reminded me of Van Morrison, The Allman Brothers, Matthew Sweet, and Donavon Frankenreiter. All the songs have a very positive message that surpass the old “sharing means caring” message of the past. You’ve got tunes that explain empathy, friendship, love, plus you’ve got the usual amount of imaginative tunes about playing with your food, playing in space, the joys of melted ice cream, and just having an all around good time. I particularly enjoyed the variety of sound from the use of Chicago Blues horns, the banjo twang of New Orleans Ragtime, the crafty guitar sound that can be anywhere in the range of Mississippi Delta Blues to late 80’s jam rock, and the soft singer/songwriter sound of it’s more mainstream songs, all while keeping it family friendly. Definitely one to check out.
