Artist: Saves the Day Album: Day Break Members: Chris Conley, Arun Bali, Rodrigo Palma, Claudio Rivera Label: Razor & Tie Tracks: 11 Type: Digital Release Date: September 13, 2011 Rating: ( )Grade: C- “Day Break” is Saves the Day’s 7th full-length album. Saves the Day was formed in 1994 and started in New Jersey. “Daybreak” showcases the band’s talent and versatility. They have had several band mate changes, but Saves the Day is back on the music scene. The instrumentals on this album were very well done and perfectly varied. For instance, the first song, “Daybreak,” smoothly transitions from relaxing music to rock to a little bit of punk to alternative. I was amazed at how well this band can play so many different styles of music and do a good job at each genre. My favorite songs on the album were “1984” and “Deranged & Desperate.” “1984” sounded a bit like Green Day, but was well done regardless of the similarities. As for “Deranged & Desperate,” the solos were awesome, the lyrics were thoughtful, and the instrumentals were flawless and memorable. The instrumentals and the three songs mentioned were the high points of this album. The gripes I had with this album were the pacing, the lyrics, and the vocals. The album felt very unbalanced because it starts off with an 11 minute intro, 9 songs that are about 3 minutes long, and a last song that is 5 minutes long. They could have spread the time on their songs a little better. Also, most of the lyrics on this album ranged from average to mediocre. With the exception of the songs mentioned earlier, none of the lyrics on this album were memorable or touched me emotionally in any way. Lastly, the vocals were whiny for most of the album, lacked any range and had no emotion. These are areas this band really needs to work on and for those reasons, I am giving this album a “C-.” |
