Title: Three and Out Starring: Mackenzie Crook, Gemma Arterton, Colm Meaney, Imedla Staunton Director: Jonathan Gershfield Studio: Entertainment One Runtime: 99 minutes Release Date: November 9, 2010 Format: DVD MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: C+ Three and Out revolves around the unspoken rule at London Underground that if a train conductor has three people die on the tracks in one month, then they are retired and given a 10 year salary lump sum. Paul (Mackenzie Cook) has had two people die under his train this month so far. He only needs one more so he plans to find someone suicidal and see if they'll jump in front of his train. He has until Monday before the month is up so he must act quickly. Thankfully, he runs into Tommy Cassidy (Colm Meaney) who agrees to the plan under one condition; he gets to spend his last 36 hours doing whatever he wants. Paul agrees and decides to make the most of the time he has left. After a quick search, I found that this was supposed to be a comedy. In actuality, there isn't much to laugh at aside from a few jokes and funny situations here and there. In truth, it's more of a drama, and it works well that way or at least better than a comedy would have been. The first 45 minutes or can be quite boring. You find out about the 'rule' and you are introduced to all the characters. Just as you begin to wonder where the story is going, that's when it gets good. This is when Tommy goes and visits his wife and daughter he left eight years ago. The final half hour is great. You really get to know all the characters and can see the bigger picture going on. Colm Meaney puts on quite the performance, portraying a shaggy homeless man in the beginning to a decent gentleman towards the end. Mackenzie Cook has really only been seen as a supporting character in films so it's nice to see him in a lead role. Then there's Gemma Arterton who does well as Tommy's daughter. Three and Out is worth at least a rental. It's not the best of films and can be very slow towards the beginning. The final 30 minutes however, are completely worth it. |
