Primeval: New World is the Canadian spin-off of the show Primeval where a group of people have to fight dinosaurs coming from the past into the present through glowing anomalies. This premiere episode starts off where we see some people doing a base jump but before one of them can jump he gets attacked by a pterodactyl. While searching not too far away we find the shows main character Evan Cross (played by Niall Matter) hunting searching for the anomaly but is unable to reach it before it disappears. Shortly after we learn that Evan is a tech genius who has built a company and wealth so he can hunt for the anomalies that is the cause of his pain and sorrow. During his search he promotes his security guy Mac Rendell (played by Danny Rahim) to help in the search that his company has spent a fortune on. When the team does find anomaly they also find themselves face to face with some gruesome dinosaurs and a government that wants to keep it a secret.

So this show is a spin-off, at least it's being called a spin-off from every description that I've read about it. However, when you read the plot outline of this show and from the core show Primeval you will find out that the shows are the same. Sure the cast has changed and so have the accents but the premise of the show is the same. This show isn't bad but it's not that great either. It would make for an OK movie where the same group of people have to hunt down unsuspecting time traveling dinosaurs but the show just don't have much appeal. There's some excitement to the show but not much and the plot is pretty much simple and very easy to figure out where it's headed. The main character is motivated by a loss that has driven him to use his wealth to hunt down the cause of his loss. There is the character that knows about his mission, Angelika Finch (played by Miranda Frigon) who don't like that he spends all the money doing that and not enough time in improving his company, a woman who gets pulled into the mystery of the anomalies, the government plot to keep it a secret, and a mystery man who seems to know all about what's going on but only gives cryptic clues that are really just more questions.

Being that I've seen the original show when I saw the title to this one being New World I thought it was going to be on a new world. Instead I got an episode that's going to be based right here on Earth doing the same things that the original show did, hunt down glowing portals that bring deadly dinosaurs. I would have rather had the show be set on another world that possibly created these portals where something has went wrong and now because of that problem the portals have opened up around all time and space. This would have led to them being on our Earth and in the past to bring the dinosaurs and who knows what other possibilities that could have been used. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to settle for this version where the premiere episode to New World gives me some a cast of actors that have no real history or development being used in a story that's already been done. At least the dinos looked cool but considering how big they are, especially the pterodactyl, I don't see how no one would not have seen them after they enter the present time. It's more unbelievable that this huge bird dinosaur was able to fly around a city and into the park without being seen. Oh well, guess I'll just have to chalk it up as a way for the show to keep it a secret until they run out of ideas.
