Thunderegg (apparently named after Oregon’s state rock) is a band that seems to have started up as a one man “bedroom recording” band and eventually bloomed into a fully staffed band, with a lyricist carrying over 200+ songs under his belt since 1994. This album, C’mon Thunder, is the bands latest outing.

My overall impression of the album was that it was a mixed bag. Some songs were absolutely molasses slow with fully pronounced vocals that sounded like they were being read off of a queue card and with an almost innocently naïve delivery (if that makes sense). One of the finest examples of this delivery would have to be “An Absolutely Ordinary Date”.

Other tracks on the album feature a more fun sense of experimentation that still hinges on a familiarity (Think The Eels or a really watered down version of The Flaming Lips) that got me halfway there, but still made me think that the music sounded more inspired then original. A hard to believe notion considering the bands history.

Still, I was extremely impressed with a lot of the lyrics on the album, some delivered with a great sense of wordplay technique, as well as a sense of heartfelt passion. Thrown together in the mix of a strange alt-country and indie rock combo and you get what you take away from the album. For me, it was a decent album with a bit to be impressed by, but in the end it never really sparked my interests. As always, final judgment is yours so be sure to give the band a shot to see if they’re for you. Enjoy.
